Gatchina Residence is the most untypical Royal suburb of St. Petersburg.
The history of this lovely Russian town 40 km away from St. Petersburg dates back to the 15th century when it was first mentioned in the ancient chronicles. During the Northen War, when the lands were liberated from Swedes Peter I presented the area to his sister Natalia.
The history of the palace started in 1765 when Catherine II gifted Gatchina to her favorite and associate Count Orlov. Built by the Italian architect A. Rinaldi, the castle witnessed numerous owners and events but has preserved its mysteries and charm.
The Great Palace offers a tour along the gallery of state rooms including the Coronation hall and Great Dining room where you will know the specificities of the Paul I`s ceremonies and his dinner menus, the incredibly elegant State Bedroom which was never used by the Tsars, and the spacious White Hall where the music never stopped playing.
The central section is flanked by the Greek gallery with impressive collection of statues and Chesme Armoury with the collection of old weapons. The palace also possesses a beautiful church of St. Trinity which has been recently restored and opened for public. The Signal Tower offers an opportunity to observe the surrounding area while the secret Underground passage that ends with a grotto is home to the Nymph Echo who keeps the secrets of the Royal family and its guests.
The place is simply mesmerizing – magnificent park with remarkable and unusual attractions such as Venus pavilions, Birch House, Admiralty, numerous bridges and ever ice-free lake surround an English looking castle.
