The cathedral is an outstanding example of Russian Classicism richly decorated from inside and outside, and its history is full of striking facts. Did you know that it took more than 40 years to be built and its architect was chosen almost by chance? The total weight of the temple is more than 300.000 tons; it is decorated with 112 granite columns and each of them was hewn and raised as a single block! During construction they applied numerous technical innovations including electrotyping and the central dome used to display the largest Foucault pendulum in the world.
