Swan Lake is the first of Tchaikovsky’s ballets, which he wrote on the order of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, though mainly tempted by a significant fee.
Although being a passionate lover of ballet, Tchaikovsky believed that ballet is “a thing that does not have a lasting existence” and not without reason as the play was quickly taken off the stage and the music itself was not initially, critically acclaimed.
Swan Lake was truly brought to life by the famous director Marius Petipa and his assistant Lev Ivanov making history primarily due to the setting of today’s traditional “swan” scenes.
